Introduction

In all construction machinery, agricultural equipment, forklifts, loaders and mobile hydraulic equipment, the steering hydraulic valve is the core control component of the entire steering system. Many equipment owners only pay attention to the hydraulic motor power and pump performance, but ignore the importance of steering valves. In fact, hydraulic motor and valve matching directly determines whether the steering is sensitive, smooth, safe and durable.
A qualified steering hydraulic valve can not only ensure flexible steering operation, but also protect the hydraulic motor and hydraulic pipeline system from impact damage. If the steering valve is improperly selected or maintained irregularly, it will easily cause steering jitter, slow response, oil leakage, and even steering failure, which seriously affects production safety. Today, this blog will give a detailed and comprehensive explanation of steering hydraulic valves, including professional classification, core working principle, different structural characteristics, selection skills and daily maintenance methods.

1. What Type of Hydraulic Valve Does the Steering Valve Belong To?

Many people are confused about the classification of steering valves. In the professional hydraulic industry, all steering hydraulic valves belong to the directional control valve category.
Hydraulic valves are divided into three major categories according to functions worldwide:
Directional Control Valve: Control the flow direction of hydraulic oil, used for steering, commutation and movement switching;
Pressure Control Valve: Control system pressure, such as relief valve, pressure reducing valve, overload protection valve;
Flow Control Valve: Control movement speed, adjust steering fast or slow.
The steering valve is a typical directional reversing valve. It cooperates with the hydraulic motor control circuit design to complete left steering, right steering and straight driving reset actions, and is the core switching hub of the hydraulic steering system.

2. Detailed Classification of Steering Hydraulic Valves

Steering hydraulic valves have a variety of classification standards according to structure, control mode, working position and installation form. Different types are suitable for different machinery and working conditions, convenient for users to select and match hydraulic valve configuration for motor accurately.

2.1 Classification by Internal Structure (Core Classification)

Spool Type Steering Valve (Most Widely Used)
The internal core adopts cylindrical spool sliding structure, with micron-level precision fit between spool and valve body. It has compact structure, small operating force and stable performance. It is the mainstream structure of modern steering valves, including manual, electromagnetic and hydraulic pilot operated steering valve. It is perfectly compatible with hydraulic supporting systems and suitable for almost all industrial and construction machinery.
Rotary Valve Type Steering Valve
The steering is controlled by the rotation of the valve core, mostly used in hydrostatic steering units. The steering feel is light, but the pressure resistance is low, mainly used for agricultural machinery and small load equipment.
Poppet Valve Type Steering Valve
Adopts cone valve sealing structure, zero internal leakage and high pressure resistance, but the flow is small. It is mostly used for safety locking and emergency steering auxiliary control.

2.2 Steering Valve Main Type Comparison Table

2.3 Classification by Control Operation Mode

Manual Operated Steering Valve: Controlled by hand lever, simple structure and low cost, suitable for small tractors and simple engineering equipment;
Solenoid Operated Steering Valve: Controlled by electromagnet, fast response, easy to realize automatic control, suitable for medium and small intelligent equipment;
Hydraulic Pilot Operated Steering Valve (Liquid Control Steering Valve): Use low-pressure pilot oil to push the main spool, suitable for high pressure and large flow heavy machinery such as loaders and cranes;
Hydrostatic Steering Unit: Integrates steering valve and orbit motor, full hydraulic control, no mechanical connecting rod, widely used in construction machinery.

2.4 Classification by Position and Way & Median Function

Steering valves are mostly3-position 4-way specifications, with P oil inlet, T oil return, A and B working oil ports connected to steering cylinder. Different median functions such as O-type, H-type and M-type can be selected according to steering locking and reset requirements to ensure hydraulic circuit characteristic matching.

3. Working Principle of Hydraulic Pilot Operated Steering Valve (Liquid Control Steering Valve)

The hydraulic pilot operated steering valve is the most commonly used high-end steering valve for heavy equipment. It does not need manual thrust or electromagnetic drive, but uses small-flow low-pressure pilot hydraulic oil to push the main spool to slide, so as to switch the oil circuit direction.

3.2 Three Working States

Straight Driving (Median State): No pilot pressure oil enters K1 and K2. The reset spring pushes the main spool back to the middle position. The oil circuit is in the median holding state, the steering cylinder is locked, and the equipment keeps straight running.
Left Steering State: Pilot pressure oil enters the left hydraulic control port K1, pushes the main spool to slide to the right, the oil circuit switches: P oil inlet → A port, B port → T oil return, the steering cylinder extends, and the equipment turns left.
Right Steering State: Pilot pressure oil enters the right hydraulic control port K2, pushes the main spool to slide to the left, the oil circuit switches: P oil inlet → B port, A port → T oil return, the steering cylinder retracts, and the equipment turns right.
Reset After Steering: After the steering is completed, the pilot pressure is unloaded, and the spring automatically resets the spool to the median position to return to straight driving.
Core Principle in One Sentence: Use small pilot hydraulic pressure to control the switching of the large-flow main valve core, realize flexible steering, labor-saving operation and stable load bearing.

4. Common Faults Caused by Poor Steering Valve Matching and No Maintenance

Many steering system failures are not quality problems, but caused by ignoring maintenance and mismatched directional control valve for hydraulic motor.
Steering lag and slow response: Spool stuck and internal leakage increased due to oil pollution;
Steering jitter and unstable speed: The steering valve pressure is not calibrated, and the high pressure hydraulic system matching is unbalanced;
Oil leakage and seal damage: Long-term high-pressure impact without replacing aging seals;
Steering failure and safety hazard: The spring is fatigued and the spool cannot be reset, resulting in inability to return to straight driving.
Especially for equipment equipped with hydraulic lock assembly for orbit motor, irregular maintenance will cause load sliding and major safety accidents.

5. Steering Valve Daily Maintenance and Standard Maintenance Cycle

To increase the service life of hydraulic motors and hydraulic valves, regular maintenance of steering valves must be done well, and strictly follow the standard maintenance cycle to avoid unnecessary failures and replacement costs.

5.1 Standard Steering Valve Maintenance Cycle Table

Maintenance Level
Time Cycle
Working Hour Cycle
Core Maintenance Content
Daily Inspection
Every Day Before Startup
/
Check oil leakage, abnormal noise, hydraulic oil quality and surface cleaning
Routine Maintenance
Every 6 Months
500 Hours
Replace filter elements, tighten bolts, check spool flexibility
Medium Maintenance
Every 1 Year
1000-1500 Hours
Replace hydraulic oil, clean valve passage, calibrate system pressure
Deep Overhaul
Every 2 Years
2000 Hours
Disassemble valve, replace seals and springs, detect spool wear

5.2 Daily Key Maintenance Operations

Check the steering valve for oil leakage, abnormal noise and jitter; check the hydraulic oil quality and oil level; clean the valve surface dust to prevent impurities from entering the valve body. For harsh working conditions such as high temperature and heavy dust, the maintenance cycle needs to be shortened by 30%-50% appropriately.

6. Conclusion

The steering hydraulic valve is not only a simple directional control component, but also the key guarantee for the safe and stable operation of the entire mobile hydraulic equipment. Choosing a reasonable spool-type or hydraulic pilot-operated steering valve, adhering to standardized maintenance, and doing a good job in hydraulic motor speed control valve and system matching can effectively extend the service life of hydraulic components, reduce failure rates, and save a lot of maintenance costs and downtime losses for equipment owners.
No matter for industrial hydraulic equipment or construction machinery and agricultural machinery, only by attaching importance to the selection and daily maintenance of steering valves can the hydraulic system maintain efficient and stable operation for a long time.
