The steering gear, also known as the steering mechanism, is a key component in the steering systems of vehicles, ships, aircraft, etc. It is primarily used to convert the driver's steering force into angular displacement of the steering wheels, allowing the vehicle to change its direction of travel. Here is a detailed introduction:
Types and Working Principles
- Recirculating Ball Steering Gear : It consists of a steering worm, a ball nut, and a set of steel balls. When the steering wheel turns, the steering shaft drives the steering worm to rotate. The steel balls in the ball nut roll along the helical grooves of the steering worm and ball nut, converting the rotational motion of the steering worm into the linear motion of the ball nut. The ball nut is connected to the steering linkage, which then drives the steering wheels to turn. This type of steering gear offers advantages such as high efficiency, strong steering force, and good durability, and is widely used in various types of trucks and some large passenger cars.
- Rack and Pinion Steering Gear : It consists of a pinion and a rack. When the driver turns the steering wheel, the steering shaft drives the pinion to rotate. The rotating pinion meshes with the rack, converting the rotational motion of the pinion into the linear motion of the rack. Both ends of the rack are connected to the steering knuckles via tie rods, thereby driving the steering wheels to turn. This type of steering gear has a simple structure, sensitive steering, and good road feel, and is widely used in cars and some light vehicles.
- Worm and Sector Steering Gear : The steering worm is the main driving component. A roller engages with the steering worm. When the steering wheel turns, the steering worm rotates, and the roller rolls on the surface of the steering worm, converting the rotational motion of the steering worm into the angular motion of the roller. The roller is connected to the pitman arm, which then drives the steering linkage to make the steering wheels turn. This type of steering gear is suitable for vehicles requiring greater steering force, but its efficiency is relatively low.
Functions and Importance
- Force and Motion Conversion : The steering gear can convert the small-torque rotational motion of the steering wheel into the large-force linear or angular motion required for the steering wheels to turn, allowing the driver to easily control the vehicle's direction of travel.
- Ensuring Steering Precision : It can accurately transmit the driver's steering intention to the steering wheels, ensuring that the vehicle can travel along the intended path, thereby improving vehicle safety and controllability.
Maintenance and Common Faults
- Maintenance : Regularly check the steering gear for oil leaks and ensure the oil level is within the normal range. Lubricate the relevant moving parts of the steering gear as specified to reduce wear.
- Common Faults : Oil leakage is a common fault, usually caused by damaged oil seals. Excessive free play in the steering wheel may be due to excessive wear of steering gear components or loose steering linkages. Difficulty in steering may be caused by insufficient steering fluid, blocked oil passages, or damage to internal steering gear components.
